MITRA: Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant

An investor education & awareness initiative.

Overview
MITRA (Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant) is a centralized platform developed by the Qualified Registrar and Transfer Agents (QRTAs) – CAMS and KFintech – to address a common yet underserved issue in the Indian mutual fund ecosystem: unclaimed and inactive mutual fund investments.

It’s designed for investors to identify, trace, and retrieve dormant investments that may otherwise go unnoticed for years. MITRA is now accessible through links on the website of MFCentral, AMCs, AMFI, QRTAs and SEBI.

As part of SEBI's compliance initiative, both above mentioned QRTAs have jointly enabled the MITRA search facility on the MF Central platform:

Key Objectives of MITRA

MITRA isn’t just a search tool—it’s a financial inclusion and investor empowerment initiative. Here’s what it enables:

1. Locate Forgotten Investments
Helps investors discover mutual fund folios that may have been:
• Forgotten by the original investor,
• Registered under incorrect or outdated contact details,
• Created by family members who may no longer be alive, leaving legal heirs unaware.

2. Promote KYC Compliance

Encourages investors to update or complete KYC (Know Your Customer) as per the current SEBI norms. This drives better record-keeping and access to financial products.

3. Enhance Financial Transparency

Supports the development of a more transparent and accountable financial ecosystem, ensuring that no investment remains unclaimed due to lack of awareness or accessibility.

4. Minimize Fraud Risk

By building safeguards into the system, MITRA incorporates anti-fraud measures, reducing the risk of unauthorized access or false claims.

What is an “Inactive Folio”?
According to the platform definition:
An inactive folio is a mutual fund folio in which no investor-initiated transaction (financial or non-financial) has occurred for the last 10 years, but a unit balance still exists.

This doesn’t mean the investment is lost—it just hasn’t been touched or updated in a decade.

How Does MITRA Work?

• Search Interface: Investors input minimal information such as PAN, email, or mobile number to search for dormant folios.
• Results Displayed: Only the Fund House (AMC) names are shown to protect privacy and security.
• Next Step: Investors must then contact the respective AMCs to proceed with validation and claims.

Industry Impact

MITRA gives you the power to find and reclaim what’s rightfully yours, help investors or their legal heirs reclaim forgotten assets, and modernize investor servicing in the mutual fund sector.

It aligns with the Indian governments and SEBI’s larger goals of:
• Enhancing financial literacy,
• Protecting investors’ rights,
• Strengthening investor trust in mutual funds.

In Summary

MITRA is a game-changer. If you or your family have ever invested in mutual funds—especially long ago—it’s worth taking a few minutes to search. You may uncover investments you didn’t know existed or help someone you love to recover what is rightfully theirs.

Remember: Sometimes what feels lost is just waiting to be found.
